Adult Christian Education

The Village Chapel offers several opportunities for ongoing Adult Christian Education.

Strengthen your faith journeys with adult Christian learning and fellowship classes and bible studies. Congregation members are provided many options to further their Christian education. Groups meet at the nearby Care Cottage, Chapel Hall, Heritage Hall and members’ homes. See a list of classes and studies that are currently available below.

Seminary Lecture Series

Join Pastor Ashley as we explore the History of Christianity. The class begins with a 30-minute video lecture by Professor Luke Timothy Johnson, Ph.D., followed by a 30-minute discussion of the subject matter. The class will meet on the third Wednesday of each month in Chapel Hall from 4:30-5:30 p.m. The next lecture is Wednesday, May 15, and is entitled: “Extreme Christianity in the 2nd and 3rd Centuries.” The class is 36 lectures in all and will meet throughout 2023-2024 when possible. There is no cost or registration required and all are welcome!

Women’s Bible Study

The next Women’s Bible Study will begin on Monday, April 22, at 9:30 a.m. at the Care Cottage. We will be studying Psalms. This is a 7-week session and will end June 3. We will be using the study book ‘As For Me’ by Adrienne Camp. To sign up for the study contact Janice Bezanson or call 909 229-3028. Practicing the Way (of Jesus)

This class is an on-ramp to spiritual formation that explores what it means to follow Jesus and lay a foundation for a life of apprenticeship to Him. Join us as we start the new 8-week Course on April 23 – we will meet every other Tuesday from 4:30-6:00pm at The Care Cottage. The Bill Wetmore 9:30 Bible Study

Meets in the office next to Pastor Ashley’s office. We continue our study using When Christians Get It Wrong by Adam Hamilton. Rev. Hamilton was senior pastor of a 17,000-member United Methodist Church of the Resurrection when he wrote this book. We’d love for you to join us.

The Al Mangum 10:45 Adult Sunday School Class

Join us each Sunday, 10:45 a.m. at the Care Cottage for Sunday School. We begin each class with prayer, followed by a video series, and then discussion lead by various members of The Village Chapel. Book of Acts Bible Study

There is a video lesson by Louie Giglio, pastor of Passion City Church in Atlanta, followed by discussion. The group meets every other Tuesday evening at the home of Bill & Michele Miller in Pinewild, or at the Care Cottage. Contact Bill Miller at 804-241-8761 or John Rowerdink at 910-235-0644.

Defending Your Faith

Pastor Trey and Ken Dickson lead a class on how to defend your Christian faith in a rapidly changing world. This course is designed to help you discuss your faith with friends and family, and how to defend it against common objections. Our next meeting will be in Heritage Hall on May 5.

One Year Bible

On tOn the first Wednesday of each month, Pastor Ashley leads a discussion on the One Year Bible. For those interested in participating, we read selected daily scripture readings – organized by date – and then discuss the readings when we meet. Our next meeting will be May 1 in Heritage Hall at 4:30 p.m. The readings for our next meeting are April 4 – May 1, and we will focus on the Book of Judges. While not required for the class, you can order the One Year Bible by contacting the Chapel office 910-295-6003. If you would like to join the First Wednesday Fellowship following the class, please make your reservation by April 29, by calling the Chapel office.

The Community Men’s Bible Study

Class meets each Thursday, 4:00 p.m. -5:00 p.m. at the Care Cottage. We will be using the Book of Romans study guide by John MacArthur. Eddie Sanderlin and Ken Dickson will lead us in this study. Eddie will lead lessons 1-3, 7-9; Ken will lead lessons 4-6, 10-12. Come and join us and expand your knowledge of God’s Grace.

Christ in Genesis

“Christ in Genesis” A women’s Bible study that will explore the relationship between the Old and New Testaments. The class meets twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 am. We will use the Bible and Katherine Caldwell’s commentary study entitled Christ in Genesis, Vol. 1. We meet in the Youth classroom of Heritage Hall. Mary Wood or call 412.592.4353

The Women’s Spiritual Formation

This group will spend 15 weeks learning about a discernment and decision-making process that Christians have been using for 500 years. We will begin with scripture meditation for 2 weeks and then participants will need the book, “What’s Your Decision? How to Make Choices with Confidence and Clarity” by Michael Sparough, SJ. Thursday Bradshaw Bible Study
